Why the old houses in California have two palm trees in the front yard?

After moving to Southern California, I noticed that many old houses (1950's-1960's) have two palm trees in the front yard. Friends told me it was very common at the time, but nobody knows why it was done? Does anyone know why?

As a horticulture in California and the author's story landscape, I can confidently say that the idea of two palm trees is rooted in an old Victorian idea. It was not uncommon side steps entrance to a Victorian house with boxes planted with exotic products such as yucca and small. Therefore, the practice continued in the 20th century because, frankly, it's a monkey see - monkey do kind of thing. They used palm trees because they were cheap and could be increased rapidly from seed. They survived because of the heat tolerance and drought of our periodical California. People moving this state of the palms is found to be the quintessence of their new paradise, and planted them, because they could not do back East.
